Anxiety and ADHD
In this video, we will discuss the relationship between ADHD and anxiety, and how brain-based differences, executive functioning challenges, negative social experiences, and self-limiting beliefs can all contribute to the development of anxiety disorders over time.
We explore the difference between fear and anxiety, how anxious thinking patterns develop, and how thoughts can strongly influence emotions, behavior, confidence, and willingness to take on challenges. The presentation reviews common symptoms, cognitive distortions, perfectionism, avoidance patterns, and the impact of avoiding the discomfort that naturally comes with meeting new people, learning new skills, making mistakes, or trying something difficult.
Drawing from growth mindset principles inspired by Carol Dweck, the presentation encourages parents to help children view challenges, mistakes, and setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth rather than signs of failure or inadequacy.
Parents will come away with practical strategies for supporting anxious children, including reframing fears, identifying thought distortions, building emotional safety, and using gradual exposure to help children face fears with confidence and support.
Your therapist has shared this video to explain skills children with ADHD need for long-term success.
