Medication Evaluation and Management
Should I consider medication for my child?
This is an important decision and it’s wise to proceed thoughtfully. As a parent, you might be wondering if your child truly needs medication, how it can affect them and whether there are better options available.
At ADHD Child & Family Services, we help you explore these questions. Medication can be a supportive tool to reduce symptoms interfering with your child’s ability to succeed at home, in school or with friends. We recommend considering medication when symptoms are persistent, significantly disruptive and not responding to behavioral therapy alone.
If you’re considering medication, we’ll help you explore all options and help you make a choice that feels right for your child and your family.
How does ADHD medication help?
Medication doesn’t “cure” ADHD or build new skills. However, when combined with effective support, it can reduce the symptoms that get in the way of your child’s confidence and success.
Since each child has unique needs and responds differently to medication, we will work closely with you to find the best solution. We will make careful adjustments to ensure your child is getting the most benefit with the fewest side effects.
What are the common concerns parents have about ADHD medication?
When considering medication, we want parents to feel informed and supported. It’s essential to understand both the potential benefits and the possible risks. Every child is unique and a solution that works well in one case may not fit in another.
For many children with ADHD, medication can provide meaningful relief by making it easier to focus, manage emotions and build confidence in daily life.
In some cases, side effects outweigh the benefits. Trouble falling asleep, a reduced appetite, or seeming less engaged can occur at specific doses. Fortunately, these effects are usually mild and we manage them by adjusting the dose, timing or type of medication.
Both stimulant and non-stimulant ADHD medications have a long track record of research and responsible use. When prescribed and monitored appropriately, they are considered safe and effective.
We will work closely with you and your child to find the right balance.
